Bulrush Collection
The Collection zooms in the Bunho technique - a unique portuguese basketry technique that shapes the natural fiber Bulrush (Schoenoplectrus Palla), into a intricate mesh of knots and stitches. Nowadays, the Bunho technique is kept by the hands and know-how of only two artisans in Europe, One of them is Manuel Ferreira. With an intention of preserving and highlighting such important heritage, the Collection combines the most iconic shape the technique takes - the wheel - with metal structures to create a new dynamic between both materials. Bulrush relies on the collaboration of two master craftsmen, a Bunheiro and a Blacksmith, to create/propose a revisited approach on ancient techniques.
Our choice of materials
Bulrush + Galvanized iron
MACHEIA’s designs start with a plant, a natural fiber. The majority of the natural fibers we work with are wild and grow spontaneously near wetlands throughout Portugal. Being a local material, we are able to harvest and treat it ourselves alongside master artisans. The annual harvest of Bulrush happens in Santarém during the months of July and August and currently, the few people that keep the know-how are the same that join the harvest. After harvesting, the fiber needs direct sunlight to dry for up to two weeks and the amount collected can be stored and must last up until the following year.
